What do you do...a strong candidate's resume has a spelling error?

In this competitive market, what is your response to a resume that has errors? Do you toss the paper in the trash and reach for the next candidate? Or, do you review their qualifications and consider interviewing the individual? Depending on the job and the industry, your reaction may differ. As a hiring manager (or as a candidate) what do you feel is a reasonable response to a resume with spelling or grammar errors?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Much depends on the type of error and the type of job the person is applying for. For people in my creative and manufacturing departments, I'm less concerned about the quality of their resumes as I am with the quality of their minds or hands - in other words, if they have a strong interview and lots of experience, it's not going to affect my decision. So, if they use effect instead of affect or have a typo that spell-check might not pick up, it's forgivable.

On the other hand, if I'm hiring someone for an office management position and they can't even bother to spell-check the document for glaring errors, or are using extremelly poor grammar, I'd be very unlikely to even call them for an interview. I need people in my office to be able to handle a great deal of email correspondance on a daily basis with decent conversational grammar and spelling, and ability to check on things they aren't sure of.

Somebody who can't be bothered to proof-read or spell-check a resume is not somebody that I'm going to hire, even for an entry- level position. We get a good laugh over those resumes, and then throw them out.
