What do you consider to be the greatest sin? Why?

Personally I think hate is the worst. No matter what your belief system, hate eats at your own health, soul and happiness. It also tends to make you do things you would never do or will regret.
My studies have taught me all but "Blaspheming the Holy Spirit" are forgivable so that is the Judeo-Christian response. Different people interpret that differently. I believe it to be the act of living in disbelief and ridiculing anyone who does believe.
I'm well read and well traveled but still believe. I've found it ironic that most atheists get madder at believers than believers do at atheists. I've been on both sides and can"t figure that out.
Can't wait to see other answers! Great question.
My humble opinion

M$It is the root cause of so many other sinful acts. People acting in jealous, hateful, and greedy ways can often find selfishness as the reasoning behind their behavior. I believe that as a modern society, we are much too concerned about ourselves, and this selfishness has led to the repression of many in the world who are less fortunate, and the destruction of the family and community.

My own observations of people around me as I work and travel throughout North America.

M$With the exception of taking the Lords name in vain. I somewhat agree with
Notshockeds response of hate. So many places in the Bible we are taught
that hate is a sin and the evils it leads us into. If we have hate in our heart
how can we love others, love ourselves? Hate leads to destruction of the soul
and heart. It will eat you up and spit you out. Yes, there are people who do
us wrong. Sometimes very wrong, but if we dont find a way to forgive them, we are the only ones we are hurting. Its proven that its not healthy for a
person to hate. In our society there is no excuse for hatred, especially because of color or nationality. There are ignorant rude people in every single
nationality, race, and religion. I truly believe there would be less sin in the
world today if everyone woke up one morning and completed a random act
of kindness for a stranger. Bless all

M$Incorrect. Blasphemy is set apart as an unforgivable sin.
The Bible actually never says "sin is sin" or that all sins are the same. What it does say is if you keep the entire law, but fail in one point, you have broken the whole law (James 2:10).
God has lists of sins that He hates and types of sinners who are not saved.
Seven things God hates: Proverbs 6:16-19, People who are not going to heaven: I Corinthians 6:9-11, People who are going to the lake of fire: Revelation 21:8.
gee thank you matt, in my opinion if its unforgiveable, then its possibly the
greatest.
Everyone interputs things differently. Seems like you either misunderstood or
I did not word my answer well
@mattb4rd I really don't think that it is fair to use the 'Fact Refuted' function against an answer to an opinion question. Different Christian denominations emphasize different things and use different versions of the Bible (the King James version WAAAYYY different from the Catholic Bible).
In addition, @bomae did indicate in the third sentence "With the exception of taking the Lords name in vain." as possibly a greater sin. This act could be and was considered a form of blasphemy. Which completely negates your refutation anyway.
Hence in my opinion coveting your neibhors property, talents and so forth is the greatest sin.
This is due to the fact that I believe that all the other sins derive from this particular sin.

M$Firstly, the Quran mentions what constitutes the sins. The first 5 are thought to be the greater sins, while the rest are thought of as the lesser sins.
1. Belief in other-than-God (ex. idolatry)
2. Uttering a lie
3. Murder
4. Adultery
5. Drinking (Alcohol)
6. Gambling (of any kind)
7. Divining (by means of stones/crystlas/animal bones/etc.)
8. Pride (in one's wealth, achievements, even children)
9. Greed
10. Jealousy
Secondly, Prophet Muhammad said that the gravest sin was: “To give God a partner though He alone created you.” Thus, worshipping others beside God is the greatest sin, and essentially involves giving the attributes of the Creator to a part or parts of His creation.
“Say: Shall I seek another than God for Lord, when He is Lord of all things?”
(Quran 6:165)
Now, you can see that taking as Lord, any that is other than God is the most sinful of all. Here is where Islam and Christianity fundamentally differ, with Muslims placing emphasis on Christ's humanity, as compared to the Christian doctrine of divinity for Christ.
I believe this concept of taking anyone/anything other than God as a supreme power over the entire spectrum of creation, is the greatest sin of all. To me, it's like losing your bearing. Once you wander in the wrong direction, then all else is irrelevant, at the end of it, your basis is all wrong.

M$your on this planet to experience it ALL good , bad, mistakes, love, health, fear..

M$The greatest sin that can happen to a child is indoctrination. I'm thinking of what the Nazis did in their schools, what the North Koreans are doing right now to kids: Breaking the free spirit and will that every child has and filling it with a bunch of empty phrases and hateful speech.
Tbe greatest sin that can happen to an adult... well... that is a little bit tougher. Maybe it is walking past somebody that needs your help to survive. Looking the other way as if nothing is going on. Hate is a candidate as well.
According to the Bible, it is Blasphemy, but that answer has been stated and I think it's way more interesting to debate about real world implications and worst possibles any of us could actually commit.

M$Mark 3:22-30 states,
"And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, 'He has Beelzebub,' and, 'By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.' …'Assuredly, I Jesus say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation;' because they said, 'He has an unclean spirit'"
Matthew 12:31-32, Jesus says to the Pharisees,
"Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come"

To add a bit more to the Christian perspective, if love is the greatest commandment, then it follows that hate is the worst sin:
"And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:35-40
