What do you consider to be the earliest religion on earth?

In a conversation today I found many people do not consider faiths from civilizations such as the Sumerians .. religions. What in your opinion is the oldest religion on earth?

The oldest recorded religion so far according to archeologists is totemism or animal worship that occurs in Middle Paleolithic era. Based on archeological evidence from Middle Paleolithic caves, Emil Bächler particularly suggest that Middle Paleolithic Neanderthal bear cult existed.

Intentional burial, particularly with grave goods may be one of the earliest detectable forms of religious practice since, as Philip Lieberman suggests, it may signify a "concern for the dead that transcends daily life."

I have to agreee with annelisle-whoever the cavemen worshiped has to be the oldest religion that we know of as of yet.

I think I'll have to have this quote answer for me.

-quote-
Every religion today most likely has some aspect of an ancient belief in its philosophy or practice, but to say that one particular religion is the oldest is naive. The reality is-- we do not know. We have no basis for comparison. Most reference books list Hinduism as the oldest world religion. This is probably because Hinduism has the oldest recorded roots, which lie in Dravidianism. Dravidianism is estimated to have been practiced around 6,000 to 3,000 BCE and as such predates the Sumerian, Egyptian, and Babylonian cultures.
-end of quote-

The oldest is probably something that doesn't even have a record. Jane Goodall has observed chimpanzees doing something that looks a lot like ritual, at the site of a waterfall. As humans, we probably had mystical belief predating even cave paintings. Maybe even predating language.

I think you could call worship of nature a religion, which is probably the oldest. The oldest deity worship may be goddess worship. Statues have been found from the stone age. This has wrongly been called a "fertility cult" because the goddess is often depicted pregnant. That's like calling Christianity a death cult because their symbol is a guy hanging on a cross. It makes sense that people would believe god is a woman, since they wanted to know where life came from, and couldn't help but notice that women give birth.

I like the thought that that was the first.

I would have to say its the Pagan religion. So many of the religions today have parts of paganism within them.

Even blowing out the candles on a birthday cake is rooted in Paganism, its candle magic.
