New York Times | G.O.P. Senate Victory Stuns Democrats
A Massachusetts Special Election, an surprise underdog winner, and a very unexpected Republican replacement for long time Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy in my opinion has turned out to be the most important political event of 2010 in the United States.
The election of Republican Scott Brown over Democrat Martha Coakley in Massachusetts has done the most to effect American politics over 2010 firstly because it had the most opportunity to do so by occurring way back on January 19th, 2010 but more importantly Browns win was the beginning of a big shift of power in Congress and a distinct signal in Massachusetts which has been a staunchly Democratic Kennedy state for years. The Massachusetts citizens turned out to unexpectedly elect a Republican and to be a touchstone for the nation desiring the Presidentially promised change and a looking glass of a nation in flux.
This shift from Democrat to Republican brought upon unexpectedly by the death of Sen Kennedy and then the special election turned out to be the change that President Barack Obama suggested in his election speeches and campaign cornerstones. To his credit President Obama had no way of seeing that the death of Senator Ted Kennedy in 2009 would become the actual catalyst for change in his administration, his Presidency, and the nation but here we are after the mid-term elections and the change is very real.
This election result coming from a state that has a very near universal 98.1% in 2010 (97.3 in 2009) health insurance overage rate for its residents is a clear indication that Obama's healthcare bill was on the right track but headed in the wrong direction.

M$I'm not going to go into all the details but a escalation in the confrontation between Nth and Sth Korea and their respective allies, including China, Japan and the US is going to set the stage for years of negotiations, trade deals, embargoes and diplomatic tension.
Will China control the North with the new young general Kim Jong-un?
Will Kim Jong-un be faced with a military coup and what will that do to international relations?
Will Japan forge closer and stronger ties to the US and South Korea?
Will the South have to retaliate eventually?
What new negotiations does this open up for the stalled US/Nth talks?
How will this tension affect the economies of Asia and their trade agreements?
With the second largest area of growth predicted for 2011( the first being Africa ) Asia is the place to watch in 2011 and the tension between North and South Korea looks likely to be used as a sounding board for other diplomatic missions for next year and probably 2012.

M$It may result in a new, very conservative, new political party, which is even more conservative than the Republicans, it may result in the Republicans itself to become even more conservative than they were up until now, or it may result in a complete seggregation within the Republican party, which would be a blessing for the Democrats.
At the very least, the Tea Party will be a factor of great influence in the upcoming few years, and may result in Palin getting enough support to run for the presidency.
For Obama, this would be the best news all year, as it would certianly mean he is re-elected for a second term (provided enough Americans have enough sense to notice that a dimwit like Palin holding the nuclear power is not a very good idea).
All in all, I have no idea how this will play out, but it is the single most important event of last year, that will have an influence WAY beyond Jan 1, 2011.
