What do people use Lightroom for?
Can't people just use Photoshop for any image editing?

Yes, of course you can use Adobe Photoshop or GIMP for editing your images. Lightroom is an alternative digital workflow designed for professionals and amateur photographers who need super fast image editing and want to apply those edits to a number of images at once. Lets say for example that you produce an Auto Trader Magazine and want to edit all your camera images to one size. This is easier to do in Lightroom than Photoshop. If you edit one image at a time, then you don’t need Lightroom
Lightroom features a spectacular User Interface and better management of images. It also provides the ability to print and create Web Galleries directly from RAW image files and speedy Metadata and Keyword insertion. On the negative side you need to import images to work on them. The speed also slows down if you have over 10,000 images in the catalog. Lightroom also is locked in to the sRGB tone curve, which can be limiting to professional photographers.
Photoshop and GIMP have more sophisticated color management than Lightroom and the ability to customize the processing of RAW images. For most of us, Photoshop and GIMP are the only editors we will ever need. For those involved in Web development or other workflow that require sophisticated batch editing and image management, Lightroom is a valid choice.
