What do Native Americans Eat?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

We eat the same variation of food that everyone else does now a days. But Traditionally, It varies from Tribe, Band or Nation, and how far back you go to precontact with Non Native arrivals...

Many as most know hunted, Deer, Beer, Rabbit, Buffalo...and even Dog... or coyote.
They Grew the Three sisters: Grain, Corn, and Sqwash in a neat arrangment with eachother. Also ate certain types of Mud, and clays for healing, and nutrition values on long journeys.

One of the most unusual recipes I have in my Native recipes books that I was given is French Fried Skunk :) ... My book is at home, so I can not at this moment cite you the Name and author. As well as had a good Indian Cocoa Cookies recipe. About 60 Percent of our Modern Day North American Crops came from the Native American... Corn and Wild Rice... stand out to me as two big contributions from Native society to our American Society.

I know other things, I can not locate the sources now.. But Before they had Baking soda they used Ash Tree ashes one half cup of Ash Tree ashes makes an equivalent to 1 cup of baking soda if I remember right.

Many things were made from Corn powder, and dried meat and berries of all types were common. Bluberrys, Elderberries, Ground Cherry.. etc..

Locally, Alot of what I eat I know the Natives enjoyed... Elder Berries, Choke Cherries (Note do NOT eat the seeds and only eat when ripe, or they are toxic) Dandelions, wild onions.. and of course Maple Sugar, pumpkins... They have a good Cherry Cherry pudding recipe... Most Native events you go to Indian Fried Bread is on display, and Buffalo burgers somewhere worth a try.
