What do men want for their birthday?

Serious answers please. If you're a man, what were some of your favorite gifts that you received from your significant other or in general? If you're a woman, what's a creative and personal gift to give to your man?
Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

An ideal gift would be something they really want, something that shows how well you understand them, and something they might not buy for themselves.

They might well have mentioned some of these things in passing, so think back!

Some examples of presents that I've loved, and great presents that went down a treat with my brothers-in-law, father etc, include:

- A DVD box set of a show or film series they love
- A gadget they'd love to have, but think is too much to splash out for
- If they love a sport, but don't often get to go, tickets for a big game are special
- An article of clothing that looks great on them, which they would never think to even look for

Something else that can be great depending on your man is you taking the initiative in creating a romantic evening, weekend, or vacation. A lot of the time women think it's the man's job to do the romancing, so it's a very nice surprise for us when it's the other way around. As long as your man isn't the type to think: "Hey, that's my job!". :)

Food is always the best way to go, get something that you know tastes good/is up his alley and you will never hear a complaint. For guys that like wine/liquor, a nice bottle of something is also a good choice.

You also should wear a hot outfit on that day.

Things that men do not want under any circumstances:
Scrapbooks
Framed photographs of anything
Mix CDs
Stuffed animals/flowers (given based on the false assumption that the irony of a female giving a male a stuffed animal will be humorous to him...it won't)
Gift certificates (we'd rather have the cash if you are going that route)

Scrapbooks totally depend on a person. My back-then-boyfriend (now y hubby) almost broke down to tears when he saw the scarpbook I put together for him. He was so proud that he asked me if he could show it to some of his important people. :)

Keg-r-ator. Yes, stereotypical, but you also have to get a GREAT (microbrew?) beer to use with it. VERY thoughtful!

I like video games, and I know a lot of women find that problematic. A really cool gift is something that relates to one of my favorite games, mostly because it says that the woman giving it to me embraces that part of my life. (or at least can tolerate it.) Sort of like giving your sports nut a football-related present.

Men like toys! Many men like gadgets, or something they can play with. There are plenty of gadgets to check out, and this is more than just a mobile phone. They like toys that will improve their lives, make something easier, like the robot that cleans out the gutters.

Here's a list of gadget gifts for men:

If I would answer this in the most accurate way, it would have to be moved to the NSFW category.

"If you're a man, what were some of your favorite gifts that you received from your significant other or in general?"

A mini-fountain and a cool sensor-based lamp. I don't like "tech" gifts, even though I'm a tech guy, but that's just me.

If he is a handyman or likes to build things, a new power tool is always a good idea. Most men prefer gifts that are functional and useful.

If he's a sports fan, you can never go wrong with tickets to a game.

Concert tickets for music fans are also very special gifts! Events often leave a longer lasting impression than physical gifts.

I always like something that I would never buy for myself. Personally a very nice bottle of wine or scotch. The best present you could give though would not cost you any money, just your time. I'll leave the rest up to your imagination.

The best gift I ever received from a significant other was a 35mm SLR camera. It's what really got me started in photography. It was an entry level camera and lens and was film based so it was only $300. You would probably have to add $100-$200 for a similar digital camera.

Leather travel toiletries bag. I've given 3 of them this Christmas and they were big hits. Guys don't normally pay attention to that or even go out to buy a travel "man-(toiletries)-bag".

Give him something he’ll brag about, not hide in the closet.
Surprise him with a gift that is chosen to suit his tastes, hobbies and desires.

Your answer was too vague to be helpful to most people. Since this is a M$2 question, people want a little more detail and the reasoning behind the answer.

This is a bad answer?

I meet the qualifications of the question. I am a man and I have birthdays. At a certain age or station in your life you have most everything you need or want and that makes it tough for your loved ones to come up with new birthday gifts.

There are many wonderful cheeses available today and I would welcome one of them for a birthday gift. Have you ever had cheese from Parma, Italy? Or a real cheddar from the UK? Or that dark brown, almost candy-like sweet deserty cheese from Scandinavia? How about a cheese made from the milk of a camel or buffalo?

This question is an opinion question and I gave my opinion. Even though it was short it was honest and sincere. So I ask you, how is this a bad answer?
