What do hair cells look like under a microscope?
Can anyone provide a little information on how hair cells look and function?

I found several images of how hair cells look like under a microscope:
1. The first image is courtesy of the Berkley Electron Microscope Laboratory While the second image is taken from pepperie.com website.
The color of the hair is determined by the amount of distribution of a pigment called Melanin. As a person age, the body produces less melanin so the hair gradually becomes gray or white.
The image on the third is a split end of human hair. Hair is subjected to a lot of stress especially due to excessive brushing and tying and using of harsh shampoos that can make the ends break. Hair that often tangles is also prone to split ends.
The fourth image is how a hair cell in the ear looks like. These are called cilia and they are the ones that catches vibrations or sound.
Functions of hair on the head:
*prevent trauma to the skull
*help insulate and conceal the skull
*help sense the immediate surroundings
