What do firefighters do when they are not fighting fires?

What do they do with all the down time when there isn't a fire? Training? Public service? Help police?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This depends, for the most part there three different types of firefighters - Career, Pay on Call and Volunteer... PoC and Volunteer are mostly the same in that they don't spend all day at the firehouse, they have regular jobs and only run to fires when they are called.

I work at a PoC department and basically we have 1 mandatory "practice night" a week, this means all the fire fighters meet at the station and work on honing their skills, there are also other practice nights if you are part of special areas of the department like tactical rescue and first responder, not to mention many weekends and such with special training course from everything from confined space rescue to vehicle extraction. We do have a few career men at our hall and they spend most of their day doing administrative work, meeting with schools, police, the city etc... doing business for the hall. As others have mentioned there is a lot of preparation involved in regards to inspecting tools, rope, apparatuses and gear. So the career guys are always working as well.

Hey Jeff... you forgot that the career firefighters usually have a schedule of 2 or 3 days on, then 2 or 3 days off.
When they're on duty and stay the entire time at the station, they take turns grocery shopping and cooking for the group.
Every firefighter I've met can make a mean lasagna!

well, as a vol. firefighter, i know first hand that when we are not fighting fires, we are at the station, cleaning the trucks, always checking our equipment and providing our services to the town in any way possible!
