Depending on the venue, it helps to be flexible. Can you play an acoustic set? Can you shrink a set down to 25 minutes? can you play a 2 hour set?
Also club owners want to see that you self promote. Leaving a "paper trail" of previous shows on the internet is a good idea. Does that make sense? Blog entries, flyers, videos (a online video of you playing to a large crowd is evidence you can fill a room)

M$But the bottom line is that you need to be able to bring in an audience. Don't lie about being able to bring in more people than you can. If all you think you can do is 20 people, don't tell the club owner you can do 50. Thats one way to make sure you never play there again.
