What do blind people "see"?

I read an article saying that blind people don't see darkness as sighted people do when they close their eyes. Instead, they see nothing at all. While it's easy to understand how a deaf person hears nothing, it's hard for me to imagine what it's like to see nothing. I'm wondering if someone who is blind in one eye can explain what it's like to see nothing and how it compares to seeing darkness from closed eyelids.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

People who were born blind see darkness. The problem is they don't decribe it as such being they've never seen anything, so darkness or black has no understandable meaning to them as it would to a person born with sight, that may have lost it in later life.

It's like asking someone what a rose smells like or what an orange tastes like who has never had one.

There is no "seeing" of anything. That part of their brain has never been tickled with input so even if they were processing something there'd be no words to describe it.

And it's not as easy as you might think to imaging being deaf. Even if you plug your ears you can still hear blood flowing. The absence of sound is quite different than not being able to hear external noise.

Try hanging out in a deep cave sometime. ALL you can hear is your heartbeat and breath. The silence is deafening.
