What disadvantages do artificial sweeteners have?

Have there been any reported deaths related to the use of aspartame as an artificial sweetener? What other artificial sweeteners available in the market can be considered less dangerous compared to aspartame?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Artificial sweeteners are man-made chemicals that have no food value and actually trick the body into thinking it is eating something sweet. Your body gets confused - when it is time to digest that sweetness, it can't find it (our bodies can't correctly process these chemicals). They also cause a whole host of nasty side-effects. Here are some artificial sweeteners:

· sucralose
· aspartame
· saccharin
· neotame
· acesulfame potassium

The best way to pacify your sweet tooth while curbing your sugar consumption is to use the herb stevia.

Well, aside from the fact that artificial sweeteners are more expensive than the regular sugar and mostly cannot be used in baking most of them have also been considered dangerous to the human health. Some studies would actually point to artificial sweeteners’, specifically aspartame, as may possibly contribute to diabetes (although some doctors said to recommend taking aspartame to diabetics) and cancer formation. This website, http://mysite.verizon.net/focused2win/id7.html, may clear your thoughts a little bit.

As for death by aspartame, I found some interesting informative articles over the internet. You can check out these websites; http://www.rense.com/general74/deatjb.htm and http://www.rense.com/general67/kentucky.htm. Another interesting internet article in http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/sepp/2003/09/26/dropping_like_flies_poisoned_by_aspartame.htm states that aspartame has contributed on many Sudden Cardiac Deaths in the US.

If you want to know some artificial sweeteners approved by specialists, here are some; Acesulfame K (approved by FDA), Saccharin, sucralose, stevia, etc.
