What did your parents do right in your upbringing? What did they do wrong?

Tip for best answer: M$0.48
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

My father left when I was young, he did everything wrong, from beating the crap out of my brother and I, to cheating and abusing my mother as well.

My mother did everything she could for me, but ultimately she did nothing wrong, I made my own choices, I know what's right and what's wrong. The older I got, the more sticky situations I got into, and I did it knowing the consequences, or what could happen, and that didn't stop me. I blame her for no obstacles I have tripped on, she did what she could, she tried to help me, inform me about the decisions I was making the best she could and whether I accepted her help, or threw it back in her face was my decision, and mine alone.

I feel those who blame their issues on their parents, about the decisions they make in life, are just afraid to take responsibility for them. But that's my opinion and I mean no offense to anyone.

My father died when I was 13 months old. My Mom remarried to a man that seem like the perfect gentleman, but after the marriage vows were over, he became a devil in disguise.

He hated me and gave me a lot of trouble.

My Mom did make sure we learned Chrisitan values by making sure we were in church all the years we were growing up. She was very close to us and taught us the Bible and morals.

She only made the mistake of putting up with this man that was doing wrong. I guess she was really in love with him bad or back in those days you were taught to stay with a man after marriage.

Right: they fed us, clothed us, and paid for a fine education
Wrong: they used shame and blame as methods of control
