What did Huxley mean by saying- Nobody can have the consolations of religion or philosophy unless he has first experienced their desolation?

Aldous Leonard Huxley (1894-1963) wrote fiction and non-fiction books. Huxley was intensely interested in and involved with Eastern philosophy.

One of Huxley'smost popular books is Brave New World (published 1932).

Huxley's quote refers to an understanding of intellect that comes from being deprived of that which one may appreciate in order to truely appreciate it.

In other words, you cannot love chocolate if you have never tasted chocolate. Further, you cannot really love chocolate unless you've tasted it, loved it, and then been deprived of it!
