Spain has a great deal of tourism and very productive agriculture and yet because of the wonderful, sunny climate there is little water. This is according to Claudio Klynhout, director of communications for AcuaMed a branch of Spanish government in charge of the water program.
The government is a strong supporter of desalination as a solution in solving the water problem. After Spanish civil war, Spain's economy needs desperate revitalization and the government saw an opportunity to boost the economy through tourism, specifically in the sun-drenched Canary Islands. But one drawback is the region lacks natural water resources especially on the eastern islands.
So to start the groundwork of economic growth working, the government decided to build Europe's first desalination plant in the Canaries. More recent events have inspired this desalination trend within Spain to continue.
When the new government took power in 2004 they build 20 desalination plant along the Mediterranean coast where the needs are highest focusing on the southern region.
