PhDs are research degrees. In addition to interning, you will also have to do quit a bit of research and complete a dissertation before graduating. I had plenty of papers to write every semester when I worked on my masters but the coursework and requirements for a PhD are more demanding. I can imagine you'd want to be an expert in this field if you want to teach at a university level. On the other hand, I have been asked to apply for jobs teaching with online universities and all that was required is a Master's degree and current, active employment in the field of psychology.
