What crotchet stitch and type of cord is used to makeThe Sak purses?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If you're referring to the "Blossom hobo" or the "Blossom Tote", it looks like a shell pattern. In the book I use, there isn't a particular name to this pattern but here are the directions:

Chain a multiple of 6 ch plus 1: Row 1: Ch 1, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hk, *sk 2 ch 5 dc in next ch, sk 2 ch, 1 sc in next ch, repeat from * across, ch 3, turn.
Row 2: 2 dc in 1st sc, *sk 2 dc, 1sc in next dc, sk 2 dc, 5 dc in next sc, repeat from * across and end 3 dc in last sc, ch 1, turn,
Row 3: 1 sc in 1st dc, * sk 2 dc, 5 dc in next sc, sk 2 dc, 1 sc in nex dc, repeat from * across and end 1 sc in turning ch of previous row, ch 3, turn. Repeat rows 2 and 3 for pattern.

It looks like the top part is just single crochet all the way for about 10 or 11 rows. For the tote, they just used a cord to gather it by looping it in and out across the row, about 1 1/2 inches or 2 inches before the single crochet rows.

If the stitches look too little, try treble crochets instead of doubles.

As far as the material, it says that it's made of Polypropylene. (I'm not sure what that it.) But you can get a type of macrame cord that is thin, about the density of yarn, but it's a lot stronger than regular yarn. If you go to a craft shop like Michael's, they probably have it. Or you can go online and find it, but you won't be able to feel the texture. I would use maybe a G or H hook. I think an I hook would be a little too loose, and anything smaller than a G would be way too tight and difficult to handle.

Once you're done then sew it together at the seams. I don't know what the bottom looks like, but you could just make two pieces, one for the front and one for the back, and then make a side/bottom panel approximately 2 inches wide that you would use to sew the front and back to with the two inch panel being the sides and the bottom part. You could put some thick cardboard on the bottom on the inside of the purse to give the purse enough sturdiness to keep it standing if you put it on a table. Then just line it with a thin cotton fabric or silk.

(I'm not guaranteeing that it'll look just like The Sak purse, but it should be darn close! And also, I was looking at a picture of the purse so I could only tell you what I think it is.) Hope this helps.

I used a book called "Crochet and Creative Design" by Annette Feldman

If she's having a hard time understanding what I mean, let me know and I'll try to explain it better. I was thinking about it later, and I thought maybe the side and bottom panel could be a little wider. Once she gets the front and back done, she should be able to tell if it needs to be wider. Glad I could help!
