It depends on the scope your looking at. In all of history, by far the U.S. has the most successful auto industry. However in 2010, China produced more vehicles than any other country (although less than half were from domestic automakers), with Japan #2 and the U.S. #3. After the earthquake in Japan you can expect them to drop sharply, leaving the U.S. #2 after China. Toyota was the top car company but you can also expect that to change due to the earthquake in Japan, so for 2011 GM should be back on top.
