You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This is a great question and hopefully I can provide you with an interesting answer. The answer is that there are countries that have advanced further than the United States has thus far with our first neighborhood being built in Boulder, CO called SpringLeaf Boulder and the legislation in California to get things changed there in the next 10 years for residential and the next 20 years for commercial.

Canada has made some steps forward in securing the use of net zero construction. There are several groups and coalitions in the country that are maintaining a striving to create more and more areas with net zero housing. The EcoTerra House in Quebec is the first building that was built through CMHC EQuilibrium Sustainable Housing Competition. This house was designed by a person at Mackintosh School of Architecture. There are other houses that have been made as well and there's exceptional progress in Canada.

China has made the 71-foot Pearl River Tower which was opened in 2009.

There are a multitude of examples and the following link will provide you with the ability to check out all the countries that have and are in the process of attempting to switch to net zero and see all their accomplishments.

Net Zero homes are the way of the future today. It is very important that we realize the Earth has an unlimited amount of resource potential, but not unlimited resources. Fossil fuels took millions of years to make and if we don’t realize our dependency on them gives no time for regeneration, we will be in even more serious trouble. So what’s the answer? Renewable Energy sources now. Geothermal, Solar and Wind resources are here to stay.

Net Zero Energy Homes use less energy than they produce. In this regard you will never be left in a situation in which you are solely dependent on non renewable energy sources such as oil. Canada and Japan have a program in which they are charging ahead to help the world rise to the occasion and have built Net Zero homes in Canada, Japan, Iceland, Korea, China and the United Kingdom. For more information go to CanmetENERGY’s page at: http://canmetenergy-canmetenergie.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/eng/buildings_communities/international_collaboration/netzero_super_e_project.html
