What could I buy my employees for Christmas?

I work in a management position and I have about 5 technicians that work under me. I have only been at this position for about 3 months. I was wondering if I should buy gifts for these people and if so what could be a possible idea that won't be overly expensive and won't too blatantly broadcast how much I don't really know them. Price ranges are helpful too.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Before you go too much farther, you might want to ask around and find out what the tradition is at your workplace. There may be some sort of gift exchange already in place and you don't want to accidentally step on anyone's toes. If it turns out that managers do give gifts to technicians, I'd say stay in the $10 to $20 range. You don't want to come off looking cheap but you don't want to emphasize the difference in wages, either.

Some well received gifts from managers I've seen are: a nice Christmas ornament; a mug or soup bowl filled with candy; a food or drink item like cookies/soup/bread mix in a jar or assortment of coffee, tea or hot chocolate; a small flower arrangement. If no one objects to gambling, it's fun to tuck a couple of lottery tickets in with the gift, too. Another idea is something helpful to use on the job. Gift certificates to a local lunch place or popular store would be a practical way to go. The disadvantage is people know exactly how much you spent and it's kind of impersonal. And, of course, no fruitcakes or those little wicker containers of foil wrapped cheese and sausages in plastic.

Are they IT/computer technicians? If so check out this site: www.thinkgeek.com. There are so many ideas there for nerds/dorks/geeks and the prices are good. The price range is a very personal thing, but I think $25 per person is reasonable.

This suggestion comes from a dork, IT person and Star Wars geek all in one...
I shop there a lot. :)

I shop there too, actually. But no these people are not computer technicians...we work in a health care setting. I don't really think they would appreciate gifts from thinkgeek the way you and I might.

The microbe plushies on Thinkgeek might be nice if you work in a health care setting. It would be funny and they'd obviously get the joke!

Those microbe plushies are a cute idea! I will keep those in mind. Thanks to both of you.

Go to CostCo or if in a city to the early-morning market where restauranteurs go, and buy fruit in bulk for cheap. Arrange the fruit beautifully in baskets, and add a box of gourmet cookies or chocolates, wrap in festive cellophane and tie with a big ribbon. Great fruit baskets for a fraction of the cost. Especially good if most employees have families.

What my friend does every year is make chocolate covered pretzels. It's fast and easy. Then she takes the chocolate covered pretzels and then puts them in festive mugs. You can buy cheap mugs at Walgreens, the Dollar store, or Walmart.

It's a super cheap way to impress people. You look like a chef, it's fast, it's cheap, and you can make it in bulk. Who doesn't love chocolate?!?

Give your employees a Kiva gift certificate. Kiva.org is a website that lets you lend to a specific entrepreneur in the developing world, empowering them to lift themselves out of poverty. Each pre-screened entrepreneur is hard working and hopes to create a sustainable livelihood all they need is a small loan. After the repayment period say ten months or a year they pay you back. Once they receive the gift certificate they get online and choose who they would like to help. Its pretty cool. I am on Social Security and was still able to contribute.

Kiva.org was featured in Bill Clinton's book "Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World".

After all Christmas is about giving.

We gave $25 in me, my partner, and my sons name.
We are very happy that we had this opportunity. Check out who we got to help.

Many stores, like Target have areas in the store with "stocking stuffer" presents, which are fairly cheap and are pretty neat, you should check those out.

An online gift certificate to Amazon or eBay is always a good idea; plus, there are so many great deals they can take advantage of (check out dealighted.com or slickdeals.net) that they could effectively double their money.

Why not bake some cupcakes for the entire group? It's easy, inexpensive, and sure to please.

The best gift for an employee is the 2009 year book planner. They are available in bookstores and giving them a planner can make them more industrious.

Now this is some food for thought - does giving a planner make them industrious? or does using it do that? The assumption is giving them the planner will be to their liking and they will use it :o)...

I would suggest WalMart gift cards. Very practical and they can purchase what they need or desire privately. $20 might be about right.

This is something I can absolutely help with. We have a unique program called a Ribbon Gifts and Incentive program. You can buy gifts from anywhere between $25 all the way upto hundreds of dollars - depending on your budget. A few benefits are:

1) Hassle free shopping
2) Gift of choice - since you gift an album, the employee gets to choose the gift without any additional cost to you.
3) Fixed budget
4) Wide Variety
5) Branded articles
6) Free shipping and handling
7) Unconditional 6 months money back guarantee
8) Since this is not a gift card, no cash value is associated with your gift
9) Can be sent to any part of the United States without any additional cost.
10) You will not need to personalize the gifts as they choose the best gift for themselves based on what they need.

To view/order the collection you can go to
www.adhara.ordermygift.com

To get more information you can contact me back by replying to my answer.
