Until recently, the XBox 360 had a lock on Netflix distribution to gaming consoles, so that would have been easy leg-up for the 360. However, PS3 is now a Netflix device, so that argument is a wash.
A big win for the PS3 is the inclusion of a Blu-Ray player. I currently own both systems, and use the PS3 exclusively for playing Blu-Ray discs. In my experience, the PS3 is a great piece of hardware, but the gaming experience is much better on the XBox 360. And as more and more content becomes available for streaming, Blu-Ray will become less relevant.
The 360's online gaming service (XBox Live) seems to be more robust and more widely used, and while it does have a free tier of service, you need to upgrade to a paid Gold account to get the most out of it. The Playstation Network is completely free to use, but doesn't seem to have the critical mass of users that XBL has. The Live Arcade also a ton of great casual titles for non-hardcore gamers.
Ultimately, you should look at the system-exclusive titles for each system (lists can be found in the sources for this response), and see if there are any games or franchises you can't live without. For example, if you love Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, and Metal Gear Solid, you can only play them on the PS3. If the Halo series is more your thing, you'll have to get a 360.
I would say the XBox 360 is the superior all-around system unless there's a specific game you're after.

M$To my surprise, Xbox seems to become my favourite. It has more good games than PS3, cheaper per game title, better graphic (most of the games...not all). I have even purchased some 2nd hand games titles that I have played in PC.

M$Here's why I decided on the PS3:
-The PS3 is a Blu-Ray player
-Online play is free on the PS3
-XBOX 360 is notorious for breaking down, I didn't want to take that risk and deal with the hassles of trying to get it fixed.

"Short answer: XBOX 360.
Long answer: Price, performance, visual quality, game selection and online support. I think the XBOX 360 wins in every category.
Price: This is obvious; the XBOX 360 core is only $299. The PS3 is around $499 for the 20GB version. It comes with a hard drive, but you don’t need a hard drive to enjoy a lot of great games on the 360 so I think it’s fair to compare both core systems.
Live: Microsoft’s online support with XBOX1 was phenomenal. They built in-house experience, user base, facilities, $$ commitment from executive level (since it proved successful), and most importantly, feedback from 100,000s of XBOX Live subscribers."

M$Xbox 360-
From a personal opinion:
I enjoy Xbox 360, because I like how easy it is to get achievements & the process of having the ability to work your butt off to get them. I enjoy the games they have, they had more than PS 3 to begin with (although the sony PS 2 had more games than the regular Xbox)
PS 3 -
I hate how hard it is to actually attain a trophy, their game selection up until this year sucked. I DO like being able to make a 3d personal character & house as my avatar. MUCH better than the corny ones Xbox 360 has.

And with the rash of "banned" XBox's being returned to unsuspecting outlet stores and reboxed and sold again, you may not know if you're getting a "banned" box until it's too late.
This is a great answer, but I would add just one more consideration.
If you have a fairly nice gaming PC, get the Playstation 3, as many of the best XBox 360 games are also on PC. While many of the best PS3 exclusives really are only on PS3.
That's a good point @cheapgamer :-)
