What computer RPGs would you recommend?
I'm going to have a bunch of time off soon recovering from surgery, and a new game sounds like just the thing to take my mind off things.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If you don't mind old school, try any of the following:
- Baldur's Gate 2. In terms of story, game play and graphics a great improvement on an already great game.
- Planescape: Torment. A D&D game but based on their Planescape world with a strong character driven story. review here - http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/planescapetorment/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gssummary&tag=summary;read-review
If you're willing to RP in a future / sci-fi setting, consider the following:
Mass Effect 1 and 2, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic... all these games were made by Bioware who made Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, NWN and Dragon Age. Their stories and characters are great... the story in Knights of the Old Republic is one of my all time favorite.
Another great franchise set in the future is Fallout. I loved the old school 1 and 2, but I haven't played 3 yet so I can't speak from experience, but it got strong reviews. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/fallout3/video/6200199/fallout-3-video-review?tag=summary;watch-review
One last suggestion - if you enjoyed Dragon Age - Origins and haven't checked out the first expansion Awakening yet, it's worth a look. The story is not as strong, but BioWare did a great job as usual when creating the Dragon Age world so it's definitely fun to go back there and continue the quest or start over with a new character.

Hope the surgery goes smoothly, and you enjoy your recovery.

M$The new Fallout 3 is a great one too. The main game is brilliant, the expansions are a bit crappy (because they're are not focused on the story)
I hope it helps, and wish you recover well.

Josey, you rock.
My list would be:
1. Arcanum (this is the is amazing steampunk + medieval fantasy, great world with feeling of a complex and elaborated universe)
2. Star Wars KOTOR I & II (these too are amazing cool graphics and a good feeling of free will)
3. Fallout I, II & III (this post apocaliptic atmosphere is simply fascinating and sharp and cinic, although 3rd is much more modern audience friendly)
4. BG I & II
5. Dragonage Origins (brilliant simple but epic, the Awakening is fine but is not really a good story)
6. Plainscape (very cool but somehow too railroaded for my taste)
Cool, I'll check out Arcanum When I get some time. I played another game by the same developer - Temple of Elemental Evil. It was pretty good, but a little buggy and a little on the short side.
Thanks muchly. By "Baldur's Gate," I guess I should have specified both - the 2nd was actually much better than the 1st. And I have played the DA Awakenings expansion, which I agree with you on - less story, but still pretty fun. Will check out some of the others you mentioned - you're right: Bioware makes a kickass game.
BTW, if either of you have never played them, I highly recommend Spiderweb Software's Geneforge series. There are five huge indie games and they're much fun. The graphics are very old school but you don't even notice because the premise is so cool.
Thanks for the tip. I'll try to check it out when I have time... I book marked their homepage.
Really glad to char with some like minded players ;) Thanks a lot for the tip. I'll check out these Geneforge series.
