The city of El Paso, Texas claims to be the first to be settled. El Paso is in the Chihuahuan Desert of extreme western Texas, along the famous Rio Grande River. The town was first settled in 1581, and officially named in 1589 by Don Juan de Oñate. Nacogdoches is often stated to be the older of the two. Paleolithic settlement of Nacogdoches began about 10,000 B. C. Now that is old! Nacogdoches appears to be the oldest continuously populated town in Texas. it first appeared on a map in 1542, around the time that DeSoto arrived.
