Philadelphia has the most colleges and Universities of any city in Pennsylvania but Pittsburgh is a close second. The Pennsylvania State University in State College Pennsylvania is the largest school in the state with over 40,000 registered students at the University Park campus alone. Since State College only has a population of about 50,000 the city has the highest density of college students.

Pittsburgh is much more affordable to live in than Philadelphia. Housing costs and transportation costs are significantly less. The cost of restaurants, groceries and utilities are also less than in Philadelphia. Living costs in Central Pennsylvania are also relatively inexpensive compared to Philadelphia. Since Penn State is a land grant institution the costs for a state resident to attend are much lower most of the universities in Philadelphia. Other cities with multiple educational institutions are Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Harrisburg and Erie.

Pittsburgh is a very affordable city. It often is named most livable city by several publications each year. It has transformed from a blue collar industrial city into a white collar city with many employment opportunities in health care, education, corporate, etc. The city has the greatest concentration of residents with a graduate degree in the United States. College students are often able to find housing for whatever range they can afford. I know students who pay as little as $275 a month; but you get what you pay for. You can find a decent living situation utilities included for around $400-$500 a month. If you plan on attending the University of Pittsburgh, they have an off-campus housing site connected to the schools website pitt.edu. If you will be a freshman, you are able to live on campus at Pitt, CMU, Duquesne and probably all of the other universities in the city.
