What Christmas gift should I get for my mother?

I'm visiting La Crosse, Wisconsin for the holidays. I still need to buy a Christmas gift for my mother and need help finding something I can buy in town.

She's in her late 50s, loves wine, spending time with her friends and fashion. Can anyone direct me to an item in a shop that I can pick up today or tomorrow? It's cold and sleeting. I'd like to not have to scour downtown or be stuck in the mall for too long if I don't have to. There's significant wiggle room in the price range.
Tip for best answer: M$22.37

Hi Danielle! I hope I can help you find a good direction for a gift for Mom.

Since she likes fashion... what about a simple cashmere sweater or just a winter cashmere scarf? I think I saw a Lands End catalog that had some simple scarfs for around $75. If there's an L.L. Bean outlet near you, you could just pop in. I am seeing cashmere items at most department stores. From JC Penny to Old Navy. So, it depends on what is close by. Most fashionable women just LOVE Ann Taylor Loft and they are known to have nice cashmere items. I wish I knew what was close to you, so I could really help you out. Check these links to see what's near you.

I have a great stocking stuffer idea if you live near a Whole Foods. At least the chain in Colorado had displays of Demeter fragrances. They have some really outrageous scents like dirt (it really smells like dirt... in a good way!). I have purchased a few and love to smell the odd ones. They have a scent called Snow and I'll bet that it really smells like the real deal. Here's is their website: http://www.demeterfragrance.com/
I love the cocktail perfumes and actually have the scent Sex on the Beach. It's awesome. The Gin and Tonic smells wonderful too. Check and see if your Whole Foods carries these items. They'd be a blast!

As for wine? What about a gift card to V.Sattui Winery in Napa Valley? This is a special place. They don't distribute their wine. You either go to the source or order it through their store. Their wine tasting taught me so much, but the most important thing I learned is that you can have a wonderful wine for a decent price at this place. Sure they have expensive award winning wines, but they also have wine for $20 and under that tastes like a million bucks!

I know it's too late to probably get a physical gift card from them, but maybe you can set something up with the store? Give them call 800-799-2337. Maybe they can send your mom a special email?
Here's the gift card page: http://tinyurl.com/2avd348
Here is the main page of their outstanding website: http://www.vsattui.com/index.cfm

If you Mom ends up loving the wine, I'm sure she'll want to eventually visit them in person. Maybe you could pick up a simple wine opener, a set of wine charms, or a wine related small item and attach a homemade gift card for V. Sattui.

I hope I could help with any last minute ideas. Have a blast up in the cold and snow!

Remember: Give a call first to places before you head out to make sure they have what you're looking for in stock. It will save you hours of time and tons of gas. Good luck!

I'd go for a bottle of her favorite wine and a gift certificate for an upscale clothing store. Gift certificates are usually well received and the wine gives it a personal touch.

Hi, I'm Japanese .

I reccomend that you buy Sake for your mother. It is a fermented rice wine.

Sake in Japan has long been thought to be an ingredient for a healthy lifestyle. As a key element for enjoying food, conversation and atmosphere, sake has traditionally enjoyed a special place at the Japanese table. Like nutrition or a good laugh, sake, when enjoyed in an appropriate amount, was believed to maintain health and promote well-being.

Modern studies now show that in appropriate amounts, sake can have positive effects on improving cholesterol levels, blood pressure and memory. Furthermore, sake contains amino acids and peptides which can improve skin.

Buy her and a friend a pass to the beauty shop for manicures and pedicures. She will then have the opportunity to get out with friends while getting a fashionable pamper session.

Who likes shopping this time of year in busy stores...while it is cold and sleeting? Not me!!!! Make her a coupon book from you...good for hugs, a better gift later on, maybe babysitting a pet while she is out with friends. Stop by a 7-11 or other convenience store and get a 5.00 dollar bottle of wine. Spend time with her and talk about how crappy the wine is and that you would much rather visit her if she retired to nice weather in Boca Raton!!

More than one person suggested perfume. I'm a mom close in age to your mom and I like perfume, but here's the thing. No one likes cheap perfume. It smells too strongly and it smells cheap. Only buy perfume if you know the signature scent she wears.

If you do know the brand, it is nice to buy the matching soap, lotion and toilet water in the same scent - something your mom may not do for herself and would appreciate if the stuff matched what she already wears.

@danielle, Get some pedicure stuff and sit on a stool in front of your dear mother who stands on her feet all day to earn a living and soak and cream her feet. Bring her tea and rub her shoulders... whatever. You be the spa. She did it all for you when you were a child. Now it's ur turn.

You could always get her a pass to a winery tour.

This place is in Wisconsin and I am sure you could have them email you the certificate and you could pass it on to her.

My dad went to one in California (company trip he won) and he said he LOVED it.

I have an interesting gift idea that would allow your mother to have a fun hobby and to get her favorite drink. You could get your mom a home wine making kit. These kits come with everything that your mom would need to make a high quality wine that she will love because she made it herself. It comes with directions and it teaches her step by step how to make her favorite wine in the privacy of her own home. With a few replacement products she can continue to produce her favorite wine and will eliminate the need to purchase it, which will save her money, if she really loves this, she can even start her own business creating these delicious wines on her own and selling them to friends. So that would make a great gift for someone who loves wines, and her friends will think this is a great thing and she will be proud when they brag about her wine.

I know you have plenty of answers to dig through above, but if you are still in a bind, I might recommend a wine aerator. I actually just bought my own mom this for Christmas. You simply pour red wines through this small glass contraption, which mixes in the proper amount of air to enhance the flavor. The wine aficionado who worked at the store said that the before-and-after taste is like night and day. He said it was absolutely worth it for anyone who "knows" red wines.

The Vinturi Essential Wine Aerator is what I bought. About $40. They have these at many wine stores, Williams Sonoma, etc. Take a look here if you want: http://www.amazon.com/Vinturi-6700-Essential-Wine-Aerator/dp/B000UPOJ5W

Since it's for your Mom, why not get her a lovely perfume? That's what I would love to receive from my daughter. Something she really loves, her favorite brand. You can't go wrong with nice perfume. And take a bottle of wine, just for the two of you to share on Christmas eve, !!
