What Charity have you just donated to? What was it like?

Please share your experience with us. (Of course don't include personally identifiable information for Net security as always).

Tell us what happened, how it works, and add any links, graphics, etc. to make it more interesting for us all. I hope that folks will continue to post to this question long after the money is won, because as we know - life is not JUST about money! :) THANKS! I want to make this a really engaging and fascinating page!!!!!!

I just donated to Kiva through the Mahalo Store
http://cdn.mahalo.com/content/assets/clear.gif
and IT FEELS GREAT!!!!! I cried when I got the email that it worked, and now a family can have a new roof!!
You can see why when you see the photo of their home in links below:

I helped a family in Cambodia fix a roof that was raining water on their kitchen stove!! Photo in link below:
11 of us, in a few days raised the money and they can now get a roof!

This is so amazing, there are people all over the globe who are helping out without leaving their laptops! THIS WEEK $1,222,800.00 was lent! They update the number each week on their homepage -
OVER ONE MILLION DOLLARS A WEEK WAS LENT TO LITTLE PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD
WHO OTHERWISE CAN'T GET ANY HELP! Can you BELIEVE it?
How many companies earn a million dollars in a YEAR, even?
WOW! WOW! WOW! (I just find that so exciting, don't you? - WE can donate millions a week! $25 at a time.)

Kiva - loans that change lives

It was so easy, I did it all online - the $25 Kiva gift certificate came by email after the Mahalo confirmation email, and it was immediately cashable on the Kiva website when I received the email certificate from them.
I surfed the site, looking for someone to give to. I wanted to have an individual with a smaller amount so that my donation would make a difference. You can also search by keywords - in this case my very first search brought up someone I wanted to lend to, in this case I was looking for the word pigs, thinking to help a farmer.

MAHALO PIG RELATED PAGES FYI:
Pig, Pork, Cuts of Pork, How to Choose a Ham
How to Cook a Ham, How to Cook a Fresh Ham,
Pork Roast, How to Cook Pork Chops, Chitterlings, Barbecuing,
How to Smoke a Ham, How to Grill Ribs, )

Mahalo graciously did NOT charge an admin fee so it all went to the Charity. Kiva gives loans to people no bank will help and over 98% of the loans are paid back in full in a year or just longer than that- who else has heard of such a great payback rate? And there is no interest on the loans - it is just that these are little
people and it is not profitable for banks to help them.

MAHALO STORE has 4 CHARITIES to donate Mahalo earnings to! (also other great products like Mahalo bling and the Ipad

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I donate to the Red Cross through the Mahalo Store, but that's not my main donation. Together with a couple of friends, I take part in the Oxfam Trailwalker, a tour de force walking event of walking 100 kilometers within 30 hours, in one go. We form a group of four, and are currently training for the event, which is going to take place on June 5 and 6, 2010.
With our effort, we will contribute a minimum of 3,000 EUR (about $4,000) for Oxfam. Last year, we totalled to 5,500 EUR (about $7,000), which helped Oxfam start a school. This year, we're aiming to open a school in Ugana.

It feels absolutely great to suffer when walking all those hours, knowing children in Uganda will benefit from our efforts!

See below for a promotional video on the Oxfam Trailwalker!

Last year, my son and I raised over US$5000 for fighting blood cancer through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) Team in Training (TNT) program. Our fundraiser was a 100 mile (160 km) bike ride on the Eastern Shore of Maryland - the so-called Seagull Century. This year, I'm raising another $3500 on my own, through another 100 mile bike ride around Lake Tahoe in Nevada and California. For this ride I'm also mentoring other, first-time, participants.

One of my reasons for supporting the LLS is that it is a highly efficient organization, with about 75% of the minimum fundraising amounts going to the mission, while about half of the remainder funds the participation in the ride, a shared hotel room, airfare to/from the event for national events, race-day jersey, etc. What's more, every last penny raised above the event-specific minimum goes to the mission. TNT also has participants running half- and full marathons, doing endurance hikes, triathlons, etc.

In the past 21 years, since its founding, TNT has raised over US$1,000,000,000 (!) for the LLS. In total, since the founding of the LLS just over 60 years ago, it has funded blood cancer research to the tune of over $600,000,000. Much of the remaining funds raised was used to support patients, their families, and to promote public awareness of the impact of blood cancers.

Later this year I'll ride the Seagull Century again, mentoring 5 more riders. Not sure yet if I'll be able to raise funds for a second event in the same year, but I'm keeping my mind and heart open to that possibility. Thus far my family and I have raised nearly $15,000 for LLS through these rides and through half- and full marathons, and this is just the beginning. I already have plans in motion that, should they succeed, will enable me to raise $10,000/year on a regular basis.

As an aside, through the training for these rides I've already lost 20 lbs, and am planning to continue trimming down to the point that riding will be even easier.

P.S.

If anyone is interested in supporting my efforts to raise funds for the LLS, helping them eradicate blood cancers, please send me a DQ and I'll let you know how you can help.

I founded a non-profit called Laugh At Cancer Org. and give ten percent of my writing proceeds to the organization with each job I do. We help provide one on one support for families touched by cancer in anyway. This is something I feel good doing, because I am a year cervical cancer stage 2 b cancer survivor who is doing my part to make a difference. Whatever I earn on Mahalo, I will donate ten percent to the organization as well. This help keep the mission alive and growing. I also help keep the website and support community open and running, so families can find support. We are planting seeds of friendship which are turning into laughter. Additionally, I also collect blankets to give out to families facing chemotherapy, in order to let them know someone cares.
