What causes the food in the freezer to form the icy coating when it is a frost free freezer?

I have noticed some of the foods in my freezer are covered in ice when I pull them out. Is this normal or do you think there is something going on? I have not tasted anything different in the food when it thaws, but the ice is just something I have not noticed before. Does anyone have any idea about this ice forming on the food?

When food is frozen thousands and thousands of water molecules within the steak form ice crystals. These water molecules prefer the most hospitable environment- the coldest place in your freezer. The molecules migrate from the steak to the coldest place they can find, which is often the side of your freezer. The loss of these water molecules causes the steak to become dehydrated. The end result is freezer burn.

My parents freezer is the worlds worst about this. You want to know the reason why? My son sits with the door open for ever, trying to decide what he wants to eat. Another problem is that my parents live far away from the grocery store.

When freezer foods are in different temperatures, they start to sweat and melt, then there is moisture in the bag, box or whatever. When it refreezes there will be this icy mess on the food and packaging. My parents freezer is a no frost and from my son opening the door, theirs will frost up something horrible. It can also happen when the seals are not good around the door, or the freezer is not working properly.

One other thing is when you don't use food quickly or get older items from the store. It gets freezer burn.
