There are several reasons that can cause itchy scalp. The most common causes are contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, head louse and dry skin. All of these play a role in an itchy scalp. These should be ruled out so that you will be able to know what are the effective treatments for this condition that you are experiencing.

First, try to check your hair scalp so that you will be able to see if there are head louse. They often move around the hair and lay eggs which causes sever itching. The itchiness are often felt at the base of the neck and behind the ears.

Seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff can also cause an itchy scalp. This is due to overproduction of skin cells that can lead to excessive dryness. These can be seen as white flakes. There are several shampoos in the market today which are specifically targets dandruff.

Contact dermatitis can also cause itchy scalp because it can irritate the scalp when it comes into contact with something. This could be due to the type of clothing, type of shampoo, or soap that one uses.

Dry itchy scalp can occur also when the head is excessively dry. The best way to avoid this is to discontinue to use any soap or shampoo which can cause excessive dryness.
