What causes nightmares?
My whole life I have had nightmares on and off, but there would be the occasional amazing dream in there somewhere. Lately, however, I've been dreaming about scary things every night. Are there any sleep studies that have tried to find out the causes of nightmares? What have they proven? Have they been inconclusive? Could underlying stress be involved? What if a person isn't experiencing stress? What would cause a sudden string of nightmares in a person, without any known inciting factor?

My belief is that nightmares are a way of the unconscious saying "PAY ATTENTION"! Stress about SOMETHING could be a factor. My belief is that there IS an "inciting factor" in a string of nightmares.
I like the thought that, if you believe your dreams mean something, then they will, and if you don't believe your dreams mean something, they won't.
Then again, it could be a bit of bad potato you had last night.
