Folliculitis is an infection that affects the skin around the hair follicles caused by bacteria, virus, or fungi. It is the most common type of skin infection. It can develop in any areas in the body except palms and soles since they do not have hair follicles. Typically, folliculitis appears like red rashes in areas affected by the infection. This skin condition is caused by several factors and it is not hereditary since it is caused by bacterial invasion.

Folliculitis causes could be due to one or more of the following.
-- Excess perspiration that dries on the skin and blocks the follicles for long periods of time
-- Various inflammatory skin conditions such as acne or dermatitis
-- Abrasions or wounds to the skin
-- Excess friction while shaving (usually if shaving with a blunt blade)
-- Friction from tight clothing that irritate the skin
