What causes COPD?

Is COPD caused exclusively by smoking? If not, what other causes are there? How can one prevent COPD?

Although smoking has been documented as the leading cause of COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease} there are other factors that can cause COPD in non-smokers. One of these is prolonged exposure to second hand smoke. Another example is prolong exposure to certain toxic fumes in the work place.

Some symptoms to look out for with COPD are as follows: wheezing, shortness of breath, feeling tired and a heavy cough. Sometimes these symptoms come on gradually and some people don’t even know they are sick.
