What causes brown spots on a Maltese?

My son's babysitter has a Maltese that is about 5 years old. She said that a few months ago, she noticed that the dog was getting dark spots on its skin. The spots are on the skin of the dog, not the coat. The dog has being going outdoors more lately, because when she watches my son, the go outside frequently to play. Could this be the cause of the problems or is this a health problem?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Tell your babysitter not to worry.
Another person asks the same question on a breeder site.

Looks like Maltese can get these darker spots from being out in the sun.

I had a dog with a white coat and his skin would get much darker in the summer... and it wouldn't be even, it would be in splotches. I would just keep an eye on the amount of direct sun, and your friend should be fine.

According to wisegeek.com, it was posted that "like most white dogs, Maltese dogs are prone to tear-staining, small dark brown spots that appear below the eyes. Wiping the eyes once a day can help reduce this issue though it may not completely eliminate it. Using bleach to remove tear staining is not recommended since it can damage the dog’s eyes."
