What causes appendicitis?

I'm always worried about my physical heath, whether it be lung cancer, heart attacks or arthritis. I'm basically a nervous wreck most of the time. Lately I've been concerned about appendicitis. If there's any information out there as to what might cause this, I would love to know. Are there any foods I should stay away from eating to prevent this? Can a burst appendix be prevented? Are genetics a factor in the causes?

Appendicitis is basically an inflamed appendix, caused be either a stomach infection or some sort of blockage that causes waste or bacteria to spread to the appendix. Different foods don't really affect the occurrence of appendicitis, but it's documented (and my mom told me growing up) that eating high-fiber vegetables can reduce your chances of appendicitis. A burst appendix is the result of appendicitis, and should be avoided at all costs. This is resolved by surgery. Lastly, genetics plays no role in whether or not you're afflicted with appendicitis.

Experts believe there are two likely causes:
Infection - a stomach infection may have found its way to the appendix.
Obstruction - a hard piece of stool may have got trapped in the appendix. The bacteria in the trapped stool may then have infected the appendix.
