Historic Babylon:
Cyrus the Great stratagem was to attack Babylon at night after a popular and long awaited annual feast when he knew the Babilonians
had abandoned themselves to every excess. It was a winning strategy; he conquered Babylon that same night

The Bible talks about Babylon (a symbolic one) as a city built by men "allied agaisnt" God, who disdained the "Eternal," and over which hangs the threat of destruction. Babylon is seen as the Devil's city as opposed to Jerusalem, God's city. Babylon will fall suddenly at the apogee of its glory, when Christ returns to earth.

Isiah in the Bible speaks of how Babylon shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah....Well, if you read anything about Sodom and Gomorrah.. http://www.essex1.com/people/paul/bible19.html (link is a children's story version) They were a bunch of really bad people!!! So, my guess (according to what I interpret the bible as) God was apparently pretty pissed at the Babylonians.
http://www.essortment.com/all/writingwallfal_rghs.htm this link gives a pretty good explanation of the history of it's rulers and their problems...like Nebuchadnezzar who went nuts...his son who overthrew him...and so on down the line.
