There is no easy answer to this question. Some reasons include the splitting of the empire into East and West components, over-reaching expansion, the rise of surrounding countries, famine, disease and the incompetence of a long series of power-hungry emperors. Some people believe that the rise of Christianity contributed to the fall of Rome. But perhaps the truest answer is that no empire ever lasts. Empires, like galaxies, plants and animals have a life cycle. Empires start small, grow and expand until they reach a high point and then gradually begin to contract. While 476 AD is given as the date of the fall of Rome the empire had been in a state of gradually decay for at least 100 years.

The fall of the Western European empire was caused by the barbarians, while Eastern Roman or Byzantine empire fell under the Ottoman Turks.

-quote-

"In 476, Orestes refused to grant Odoacer and the Heruli federated status, prompting the latter to kill him, depose his son and send the imperial insignia to Constantinople, installing himself as king over Italy. Although isolated pockets of Roman rule continued even after 476, the city of Rome itself was under the rule of the barbarians, and the control of Rome over the West had effectively ended. The Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire endured until 1453 with the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks led by Mehmed II."
