You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

From what I learned by reading Tokyo Underworld by Robert Whiting and my experiences living in Japan, it is a mix of several factors.

One was the environment created by General MacArthur post WWII that fostered business development sometimes at the expense of the intellectual property rights of US companies.

Also, the government of Japan and large technology corporations worked very closely with each other to ensure that business succeeded. This, along with the "company first" mentality of the workforce, led to many of the successes of the 80s and early 90s.

The technological success of Japan today is a mixture of past success along with the fact that Japan is such a "condensed" population. Innovations in high speed internet, cell phone technology and the like are made possible by the fact that so much of Japan's population lives in such a small geographical area.

But the culture of the workforce in Japan (and to the larger extent, the general society) is probably the biggest factor for why Japan is such a technologically advanced nation. Japanese people are not "worker drones", but in general, they are more prone to longer work hours than other "developed nations".

Japan is not generally known for it's technological innovation, so much as it is known for perfecting the ideas of other countries (that don't receive the attention/investment they deserve) through hard work.

Note: This is my personal opinion and not that of a "qualified analyst"
