"During the European leg of the Damage Inc. tour in support of Master of Puppets, the band had complained that the sleeping cubicles on their tour bus were unsatisfactory and uncomfortable. Guitarist Kirk Hammett was arguing with Burton about who was getting the pick of the bunks, so as a solution they drew cards. On the evening of September 27, 1986, Burton had won the game with an Ace of Spades. He was asleep when at several minutes before 7 am, according to the driver, the band's tour bus ran over a patch of black ice, skidded off of the road (the E4, 2 miles north of Ljungby), and flipped onto the grass in Ljungby Municipality, near Dörarp in rural southern Sweden."

good job. I was hoping for a true fan without research to know the answer too .:)
Awww.. I swear I am a true fan, but looked it up to gain "credibility" so people didn't think I pulled the answer of of my you-know-where. Metallica just isn't the same without him, they went from total thrash with Ride the Lightning to pop-rock mainstream songs like "Enter Sandman" the like. They finally seem to be getting back on track, just not the same.
