What can we do to help boost the body image of today's teen girls?

The self-esteem of women has always been a critical element of their success. Body image is often a touchy issue for teen girls. Peer pressure, media, and family can all play a role in positive and negative body image for young girls. What are some strategies that we can employ as parents, relatives, and even businesses in order to help promote positive body image in teen girls?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think self confidence in body image of young girls (and boys) begins at home. Young girls pick up on attitudes of their parents about their body images (and other things). Parents should be careful not to criticize their own body or the body of the child. We have to enforce that a brilliant mind, an outstanding talent, or a congenial personality, and kind spirit are all as equally important in this world as outward beauty. Outward beauty can quickly diminish and if there is nothing else then that person will be lost when it's gone. On the other hand a brilliant mind will continue to flourish even after the beauty is gone.

I think we need to focus on HEALTHY bodies. Teach children to respect themselves and others from the inside out. But as long as the media continues to portray the perfect girl as a particular size, particular shape, particular hair color, eye color; it's going to be hard for parents to teach children this lesson. I say do as much as possible within your family and pray for the rest!

Hello @kelraye!
I'm glad that you asked this question because I have problem myself with regards to my daughter who is in her teens. She always complains that she has big legs and that she is fat and I admit I find it quite difficult on how to handle it.
I found these helpful tips and guide on how to boost a teen's body image and how we as parents make our teens feel good about themselves.

1. It would be best as a parent to carry your own weight and shape with comfort and pride as well as work through own negative attitudes.
2. Get rid of your bathrooms scale since it is very easy to let the numbers on the scale determine how you feel about yourself. What really counts is your children's intelligence, thoughtfulness and canny sense of humor.
3. Spend some time with your teen and help her find a style that looks good on her.
4. Challenge stereotypes, that thin is different from slim.
5. Educate your teen about the basis of genes when it comes to weight.
6. Don't fight over weight but help your teens learn how to eat a well-balanced meal.
7. Enjoy your food and make sure your teens are enjoying theirs too.
8. Encourage your teen to enjoy and appreciate your body. Often hug her and make her feel secure that she is loved no matter what.
9. Don't comment on her weight for this can affect a teen's self-body image.
10. Don' let family or friend comment on your teen's weight and stand up for your teen.

Get them involved in sports. If the kid is not a team player, encourage them to do yoga or long distance running or other individual sports. Once a kid is into working out they will be less inclined to do stupid stuff to themselves and may get interested in eating well and staying clean off of drugs
