Bearded dragons make wonderful pets for anyone interested in owning a reptile. They stay quite small and are very docile lizards that love to be held and adored. Their feeding habits can be tricky. They can be picky about what they will consume also, especially when they are young. Beardies are omnivorous which means they eat both plant and animal. Crickets are a favorite of both young and older beardies. When young they may be fed crickets three times a day but as they get older it can be only once a day for the crickets. The crickets should be no larger than the space between their eyes which means tiny crickets for youngsters and bigger ones for the adults. Thankfully most pet stores sell them in different sizes. The crickets should also be dusted in calcium powder. This is extra nourishment for your lizard. Leafy greens and other vegetables should also be fed to the dragon daily. They should be sprayed with water which will help keep them from wilting and will provide water for your dragon. One word of warning, iceberg lettuce is a no-no for dragons as it will impact their digestive system and make them sick. Spinach is also another green to avoid. When a dragon reaches adulthood, the crickets can also be exchanged for cockroaches, locusts or a variety of worms. Once on a schedule your dragon should eat heartily on its well-balanced diet.
