Hello @twisism!
Hepatitis B is causes by hepatitis B virus. The infection it caused to the liver can either be in acute stage or chronic stage.
For acute hepatitis B, affected person will notice symptoms more or less 4 months after exposure. In majority of people who have this, symptoms can resolve in a couple of weeks and they are cured of the infection but a small portion develop severe and life-threatening form called fulminant hepatitis.
For chronic hepatitis B, the infection last longer than 6 months and once it becomes chronic the infection stays and never goes away.
There are approximately 90% to 95% or infected adults can fight this virus off so their infection is cure and only about 5% to 10% of adults continue to develop chronic infection. Children have a higher risk of infection and 90% of the will fail to clear the virus from their bodies and will further develop to chronic infection.
