What can I do to prevent credit card fraud and identity theft?

What are the best ways for me to keep myself and my money protected from credit card fraud and identity theft?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Keep your credit card in a small wallet and keep it close to your body. Don’t expose your credit card longer in a shopping mall as thieves can take a picture of your credit card via their cell phones or camera. Verify the amount on the credit card receipt before signing. Avoid disclosing your credit card number on phones. While online, use virtual keyboards provided by the shopping websites and shop on 100% secure websites. But how would you know the website you are shopping is safe?

For this purpose look at the “s” number after http:// like https:// which means the website is safe and secure. Review your credit card statement every month and ensure everything is well. Took the services of the banks mobile alert facility, in which you would be sent an SMS as soon as a transaction takes place from your card.

The person before me had some great answers on avoiding credit card fraud, and here's another one: avoid using credit cards altogether. I know that might not sound like it's the most helpful tip, but using cash is not only the only way to avoid sharing sensitive information, it's also a great way to save since you're avoiding credit card interest and fees. Most budgeting tips will advise you to use cash or the envelope budgeting system when you're trying to save money.

As well, these days there are several options for shopping online without a credit card, such as eBillme, which allows you to pay for your shopping like you'd pay for a utility bill online, so your financial info is only shared with your bank instead of with a bazillion different shopping sites AND your payment service. eBillme offers a lot of the same benefits as credit cards too, like cash back rewards and buyer protection (in case you find a better deal elsewhere).
