What can I do online to connect/promote/attract potential volunteers to a children's orphanage in Thailand for Burmese refugees?

Right now, just posted on www.Idealist.org. Looking for volunteers who want to make a difference in any way...i.e. teaching English, help with building projects, grant writing, fundraising, etc.

Tip for best answer: M$15.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Recruiting online volunteers calls for appealing to the intrinsic and unique value of this kind of service. . Online volunteering can be attractive to potential volunteers because of ease of entry. Applications and interviews can be done online, there is no commute, and volunteering can be done anyplace there is access to the Internet.

Volunteers can be young, mature, shy, homebound, male, female, people with disabilities, students, professionals, retired or unemployed.

According to ServiceLeader.org, marketing volunteer opportunities online offers many benefits for recruiting both face-to-face and online volunteers:

* It's effective, quick, easy, and doesn't require any additional costs.
* It's an excellent way to reach non-traditional volunteers, and populations that might be under-represented in an organization's volunteer ranks, such as seniors, ethnic minorities, and people with disabilities.
* You can reach a very targeted group, such as a particular kind of professional or people in a specific geographic area.

An effective practice offers tag lines created by ServiceLeader.org for use in recruiting this diverse population and is excerpted from the article ""Volunteering at Your Fingertips" by Mary Merrill. A link to the article is provided here:

http://www.merrillassociates.net/topic/2004/10/volunteering-at-your-fingertips/

ServiceLeader.org developed the following tag lines to place on an organization's website to attract online or virtual volunteers:

* Don't just surf — volunteer!
* Volunteer in your bunny slippers!
* Wear your pajamas to work
* Do good from your desktop
* Click into action
* Surf and serve
* Click and serve
* Download good deeds
* Volunteers can do it — online
* Engage in a little mouse-to-mouse resuscitation
* Volunteer whenever you feel like it
* Nighttime, daytime, anytime is the right time to volunteer online
* Make a difference — virtually!

Hope this info helps!

Create a Facebook profile for the orphanage and promote it through other social sites such as Twitter and even MySpace. I'm a member of several non-profits on Facebook and even though I can't donate very much, I do donate part of my page to highlight them to people who visit. Alot of people do this, which gets the word out, not just here in the US but all over the world, as none of the social sites are US exclusive.
You might also contact Grassroots.org and other non-profit associations/groups and ask them to assist you in finding volunteers.
In addition, contact Peace Corps to see if you can get on their list of volunteer agencies. Churches are a great source of volunteers as well. US and European churches have outreaches in other countries, distributing food, medical assistance and even helping build whole villages.
That's just a few ideas, let me know if you need help acting on any of them or if my answers give you ideas of your own.

You can advertise the volunteer positions on idealist.org of course but here's a source of many others http://www.energizeinc.com/prof/volop.html and use twitter to get people to spread the message. You can offer to do a guest post on people's blogs, but promise to make each unique and not just copy and paste i.e I would let you do a guest post on mine; but keep them informative and around 100 words with a link of course....thanks

Organizations with state-level tax exemption
Organizations fiscally sponsored by another organization with 501(c) status
Registered political campaigns
