The leading causes of traumatic brain injuries are from accidents which include vehicle crashes, sports injuries and falls. The brain is soft and is vulnerable when injuries occur to the head. Other circumstances that can cause brain damage is drug abuse, lead poisoning, toxic chemicals, whooping cough, asphyxia, whooping cough, meningitis, syphilis, epilepsy and other various types of illnesses. When a brain injury occurs the brain cells begin to degenerate. The effects of brain damage depend on the severity. When an injury causes moderate brain damage the effects may be blackouts, faintness, dizziness, blurred vision, tiredness in the eyes, ringing in the ears, a foul taste in the mouth and changes in mood, behavior or sleep patterns. Serious brain injuries can cause seizures, excessive nausea and vomiting, convulsions, the inability to wake up, loss of coordination. Stupor and unresponsive states resembling a vegetable state can also occur.
