What can be the source of chest pain?

Tip for best answer: M$0.60
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Chest pain may arise from a variety of sources. While each of the following sources of chest pain may have a classic presentation of signs and symptoms, there is significant overlap among the symptoms of each condition, and the symptoms may be affected by age, gender, exercise, overeating, anxiety, tension, sleep disturbances and race.

The sources of the chest pain may include:
• Simple chest muscle pain or chest wall’s ribs pain, or pain on the skin on the chest. Simple analgesic relieves this pain.
• Pain from LRTIs (lower respiratory tract infections), infections in the lung (bronchitis, brochiectasis, pneumonia, broncho pneumonia, lobar pneumonia, pleurisy, pneumothroax), the pleura (the lining of the lung) or the trachea, or the bronchi, etc. Antibiotic is essential in this conditions.
• Pain due to hydrochloric acid reflux from stomach to the esophagus or regurgitation in to the esophagus (reflux esophagitis). Antacid, ranitidine, PPP (proton pump inhibitors) like esomeprazole or or lansoprazole or omeorazole, etc is the right choice.
• Pain due to GERD (gastro esophageal reflux diseases). PPP (proton pump inhibitors) like esomeprazole or or lansoprazole or omeorazole, etc is the right choice.
• Pain in the diaphragm (the flat muscle that separates the chest and abdominal cavities).
• Some referred pain from abdominal organs like the stomach, gallbladder, and pancreas, seem as chest pain.
• Pain in the heart including the pericardium (the sac that surrounds the heart) or myocardium.
• Pain in the aorta.

People usually think Chest pain as heart attack. In fact, typical heart attack pain occurs in the mid to left side of the chest and may also extend to the left shoulder, the left arm, the jaw, the stomach, or the back. Having chest pain is a very horrifying and frightening experience that a person can have. There are two things that come to mind when it comes to chest pain. The first is a pinched nerve. I had this happen because I would get a pinched nerve in the side of my ribcage and it would result in sudden sharp pains, almost like someone zapped me with an electric shock. The other thing is anxiety and stress. I used to have a mild anxiety problem and when this chest pain first occured, I knew nothing about what it was and basically I thought that I was encountering a "heart attack".

The following are the causes of chest pain -
1)Heart burn.
2)Benign chest wall pain.
3)Anxiety or panic disorder.
4)Asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia,pleurisy.
5)Recent chest trauma.
6)Peptic ulcer syndrome.
7)Costochondritis.
8)Oesophagitis or oesophageal spasm.
9)Angina due to coronary artery spasm or disease.
10)Pericarditis.
11)Mitral valve prolapse.
12)Heart attack.

Thus it is evident that the cause of chest pain can be anything from a catastrophe to triviality. So no one will neglect it, especially if it is left -sided and will immediately consult with a doctor for his advice and will act accordingly. No self-medication will be tried as it may aggravate the condition.
