What can be done to people who copy others music and use it as their own.

there have been several occasions.
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

That's copywrite infringement and you can sue the offending party for royalties or other penalties. It happens a lot with rappers who sample music without getting consent from the original party.

Go get 'em tiger!!

Yes - you'll want to talk to a civil lawyer (not criminal) and then tell the lawyer what the story is, and bring a copy of your work and the offenders' work to your initial meeting. After they hear your story and listen to the work you've brought them, they will consider your case. Once they say they will take your case, you'll need to pay a retainer (which basically "hires" the lawyer) and then they will go to work for you beginning the law suit. They have to file a lot of papers with the court and then ultimately, the court will issue a summons to the offender telling them they need to be in court on X date because you're suing them - and then the fun begins.

Be aware that you'll be paying a good bit of $$$ for both the lawyer and court fees, so whatever you ask for in a settlement needs to be able to pay for all of that, plus your cut. That said, you'll probably have to pay the lawyer up front, so make sure this is something you want to do first.
Also, this CAN take a while - the offender will also have a lawyer who's job it is to draw it out as long as possible, make it as expensive as possible for you in hopes you'll just quit. So be ready.

Good luck.
