You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Studies and research show that strengthening exercises can help improve muscle strength in people with peripheral neuropathy. .Regular exercise may also reduce pain felt and control blood sugar levels.
You have to consult or refer a Physical Therapist or a healthcare provider regarding the exercise regimen suited for you.

These exercise regimen will include four types of activities namely aerobic exercise, flexibility exercise, strength training exercise and balance exercise.

For aerobic: - increase heart rate
works the muscle and increase breathing rate
examples of aerobic exercise are: brisk walking, low impact aerobic class, swimming, stationary bicycle

For Flexibility: - stretching to help joints become flexible to avoid injury
- 5-10 mins. of gentle stretching to help the body warm up before doing aerobic activities

For increase strength: using weights, elastic bands or plastic tubes, (your brother will be taught by physiotherapist on how to use them)
- your brother can also lift weights at home

Your brother can also visit the nearest Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Clinic in the area you are living, they can help prescribe exercise regimen suited for him.

PHYSICAL THERAPY

Physical therapy may be helpful in maintaining strength, mobility, and function regardless of the underlying cause of Peripheral Neuropathy (PN). Patients with diabetic neuropathy may also benefit from physical therapy, however, diabetic neuropathy patients must also tightly control their blood sugar levels to prevent major fluctuations.

The objectives of physical therapy include:

* Maintaining and improve functions via a range of motion - passive range of motion exercises consist of progressive stretching and self stretches
* Strengthening muscles - this includes exercising against increasing resistance, use of weights, and isometric exercise
* Balance training provides stability and prevents falls
* Physical therapists can also recommend braces and/or splints to enhance balance and posture
* Splinting is often used in the treatment of compression mononeuropathies, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
