What breed of dogs are the best in drug sniffing?

When we were traveling and waiting to board the boat. A drug sniffing dog went around all the baggage sniffing. The dog used by the port security was a German shepherd. After that when all were cleared we then proceeded to board the boat. What other breed of dogs are considered good for detecting drugs? Is there a particular breed that excels in this kind of task?

According to these two articles by www..toptenz.net and www.wikipedia.org the Labrador Retriever,Springer Spaniel,Beagle ,Bloodhound,German Shepherd and the Argentine Dogo are the best dogs use to sniff out drugs. In the www.toptenz.net article the Labrador Retriever is listed as the seventh smartest dog and probably the best dog for sniffing out drugs.

Labrador Retriever
This is one of the most intelligent as well as one of the most popular breeds of dog in the world. The Labrador Retriever is an amazing breed of dog that offer many different services. The breed originates from Newfoundland and was trained to hunt waterfowl. As time has passed, Labs have been introduced to more and more jobs. Many of these dogs are used in the police force as bomb sniffing or drug sniffing dogs. Any dog that can be trained to do this is most definitely smart. These dogs are also used as rescue dogs. Many are trained to help the disabled, especially the blind. Labs can be trained to lead a human around while ignoring any type of distraction. The Labrador Retriever is a loving, obedient, and patient dog that can be trained to do almost anything.

"Best Dog" may be a bit subjective since it depends on whether the canine will be used for multiple roles, such as patrol, bomb, or other. For purposes of purely searching for drugs, the US Customs department records Labradors as being the most successful. It is also notable that many private firms also utilize Labrador Retrievers.

1."A US Customs Labrador named "Snag" has made 118 drug seizures worth a canine record $810 million.

The greatest number of drug seizures by dogs is 969 in 1988. IN ONE YEAR! The team of "Rocky" and "Barco" patrolled the Texas and Mexico border, alias "Cocaine Alley." They were so good that Mexican drug lords put a price of $30,000 dollars on their heads."

2. Sniff Dogs:
"All Sniff Dogs are Labrador Retrievers, selected for their intelligence and friendly temperaments."

The most common breeds used are GSD and Mals simply because they are the most common breeds used in police work in general and a lot of detection dogs are duel trained as patrol dogs. However for strictly detection work you will see any number of breeds and mixes in addition to the afore mentioned GSD and Mals other breeds I have seen used are Labs, Border Collies, APBT, Poodles, Beagles, German Shorthair Pointers, Rotties, Schnauzers, I even read an article once where on agency was using a Dacschund.

I can see a lot of German Shepherd and Labradors in drug sniffing operations. No wonder since these two dogs have been consistent in the list of most intelligent dog breeds.

A dog trainer over here says it does not matter what kind of dog it is. They work for you because they love you.

The dogs I see used most often by Police in the UK for sniffing drugs are springer spaniels.
