Hi and thanks for your question. Some birds that make the best pets would be Parakeets, Finches, Budgies and Cockatiels. The larger birds such as the Amazon and the Macaw make good pets as well but require a lot of care, time and attention.
Cockatiels make great pets as they can be socialized and taught to talk. They also are not very aggressive if trained by the proper person. Some things to do before purchasing one would be to meet the bird in person and see how it interacts with you. Buying it from a breeder most definitely helps as the ones in pet stores are older and sometimes can be very aggressive from lack of attention being paid to them.
It is very likely that your grandmother would love a parakeet as they do not require too much care and are pleasant to watch as they play with their toys and sing in their cage. They can be quite noisy at night so it is best to get them a cover when you give the bird to your grandmother.
