What attributes of a female pop star make her a likely candidate to become a gay icon?
Some female pop stars find a particularly enduring popularity with gay men, and are frequently chosen by female impersonators as inspirations for character pieces. Some strong examples are Cher, Liza Minelli, Madonna, Patti LaBelle and Judy Garland. Am wondering ... what qualities of a female pop star give her a greater than average allure to the gay community, and particularly gay men? Is it all about the music, physical appearance, and/or persona? Or is there more to it than that?

I know several performing drag queens that do female impersonations at a club. The generally pick artist that match their personalities. Drag queens usually love things loud, flamboyant and elaborate. So, they are going to come more near impersonating women who fit this range. Take Cher for example. Her outfits are not even feasible on any level. She also usually has some large head dress of some sorts. I know a drag queen that does her on occasion.
I know some other drag queens that love to do Janet Jackson, Beyonce and Tina Turner.
I think they like women who are different, have sexuality and express a very vivid wardrobe, but I think they do try to find some who actually have talent as well. I do know one who does a great likely hood to India Arie. Oh I just remembered as well, many love Jessica Rabbit too.
