What artist would you collect if you had, say, $10 million to spend?

I really like Felix Kelly's whimsical creations -- a bargain at around $40k

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I only know artists that are pretty famous, and I'm not sure you could "collect" any of them even for $10m.

Maybe you could acquire a few of their lesser works.

The shortlist would be:

Monet
Miro
Matisse
Klimt

If I'm only allowed one, and the budget could stretch to it...

I'll pick Monet. Because his work is joyous, beautiful, uplifting and expansive, and those are the qualities I'd most love to have in the art around me.

The first time I saw a Monet in a gallery, someone I was with said "My mind is gently blowing".

That just about says it all. :)

Some nice sites I looked at while weighing up the options :

http://www.iklimt.com/

According to Wikipedia, you can buy Miro paintings from $250k on up. And there are prints too. So for $10m you could probably collect some of the work of some of those artists.

I'm not so much into art that I even know of many artists other than the masters.

Yes, one of the reasons I selected $10million was to stimulate discussion of artists other than the masters. The art market is so deep that there are splendid works available from a few thousand on up.

I'm a sucker for glass art--always have been.

I was at The Missouri Botanical Gardens here in St. Louis and there was this absolutely stunning (and likely priceless) blue and white chandelier by Dale Chihuly hanging in the entrance to the visitors' center It is 179 x 85 x 85".--almost 15 feet tall.

Bottom photo shows two similarly styled entrances to a rose garden near that building.

The man is a master, Read more about him here:

Even though her works do not total anywhere near $10million I would buy my friend's sisters painting. I love them. I've been in love with Lisa Occhipinti's work for years now.

I'd also buy some photographs. I've also wanted to own one of Annie Leibovitz's large scale images. Her images in person are amazing. You feel every single texture in them.

I'd also own an Elizabeth Murray painting. Her playful pieces can only make you smile. I want the third image down.

Cy Twombly, definitely - so soothing, sensual and elegant.

He is a modern artist (20th century) from New York. Vogue wrote about him and I right away was struck by his paintings because his newer painitings had this dreamy impressionist Monet touch to them.

I hate to say it, but I don't get the Mona Lisa's appeal.

Have you ever been to The Louvre? I was an art and antiques dealer for 6 years, co-owner of two stores. I walked all the way down to the end of that hallway where The Mona Lisa was. I don't know the size but I'm estimating 20" x 24". The only thing that came to mind was This is it?"

The chocolate croissants-"pain au chocolat" more than made up for it. THOSE were works of art, every morning for breakfast.at this tiny boulangerie in the 3rd.

I've always been a fan of Van Gogh. He was a troubled soul and died at a young age (late 30's, I think). He was generally unknown and unappreciated in his time, but had a great influence on modern art. I had the opportunity to see a few of his paintings in a museum, and was astounded by the rich textures and vivid colors. A reproduction of a Van Gogh painting is nothing next to the original work.

This is "Starry Night," probably one of his most recognizable paintings.

I would never collect investment art. I would only collect art that I personalty enjoy and has meaning to me. I'm sure I could find a nearly endless amount of beautiful pieces for $10 million.
